Swisserland, 1933

LiFang (1933–2020) was one of the few Taiwanese women artists who lived and worked in Europe over an extended period. She graduated from the Department of Fine Arts at National Taiwan Normal University and studied painting under Li Shiqiao. In 1956, she co-founded the Fifth Moon Group with Liu Kuo-sung, Guo Dongrong, and Guo Yulun, becoming a key force in the development of postwar avant-garde art in Taiwan. In 2023, her work was included in the Whitechapel Gallery’s spring exhibition Women Artists and Global Abstraction 1940–70 in London, shown alongside female artists from around the world. This presentation marked a renewed international recognition of her practice and served as a timely reminder of her position within postwar art history.
