NADA Cancels 2019 New York Art Fair

New Art Dealers Alliance, as known as NADA, announced on August 8th that it would cancel the 2019 edition of New York art fair in March, while its Miami art fair will be held as usual in December.

NADA, a definitive nonprofit arts organization that established in 2002, dedicated to the cultivation, support, and advancement of medium/small galleries and emerging artists in contemporary art. In addition, it helps the general public to have access to contemporary art. NADA members include galleries, nonprofit art spaces, advisors, curators, writers, museums and other art professionals from around the world.

Featuring medium /small galleries and emerging talent, NADA has already become the mainstay of the smaller art fairs in New York. Compared with the large art fairs, (for instance, Art Basel), the price of the work from NADA is more affordable, thus resulting in another choice for collectors.

When the cancelation news was released, it raised concern among art market in New York. Since 2003, NADA has been annually holding the Miami Art Fair; since 2012, it has held art fairs in New York every year. In just seven years, NADA has established a strong reputation in the New York. Moreover, it has even been listed as one of the highlights during the New York Armory Show Week.

According to ARTnews, the move comes as many medium /small galleries have been closing, with some dealers stating that they cannot afford attending fee for lack of budget.

“This gives NADA the time to develop and deploy new initiatives that will best serve our members as their needs continue to shift and evolve. Producing alternative models for the public to engage with contemporary art has always been central to NADA’s mission, and the combination of NADA Miami and directing focus towards the galleries and their exhibition programs will make for a more dynamic season.” Heather Hubbs, NADA’s executive director, said in a statement.

Taiwan goes through a slump in the art market, as the same situation in New York. In addition, while small /medium galleries stay in long-term negative growth, leading to lacking extra money and energy to participate in fairs. Thus, the participants of fairs usually stay with the same crew every year. Now the main priority is how we solve the problem.
