2018 ART FORMOSA

— July 14, 2018 by YIART

2018 ART FORMOSA now holds in the Eslite hotel and Songshan Cultural and Creative Park (No. 2&3 Warehouse) between July 13th to July 15th. This year, ART FORMOSA includes a total of 66 galleries from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Seoul, Busan, London, and Moscow. Most foreign galleries are from Japan. With the achievement last year, the unique presentation of the solo exhibitions and hotel art fair still takes place at the warehouse area and hotel respectively.

Warehouse area focuses on exhibiting single artist. The hallway is designed as a public art exhibition area, with some sculptures and installment arts. Besides, there are three special shows in the no.3 warehouse, including American artist Irving Kriesberg, Indonesia artist Nashar and Fifth Moon Group and Dongfang Group.

In the warehouse area, YIRI ARTS presents works from Taiwanese artist SHIH Yung Chun. The artist tries to make three dimensions effects by his two dimensions paintings. gallery UG from Tokyo brings young artist NOHARA Kunihiko, having interesting vibes in their space. CLEAR GALLERY TOKYO from Tokyo brings sensational films by Thailand artist VATANAJYANKUR Kawit in their space. Keumsan GALLERY from Seoul presents works by KIM Byungjin, LEE Dongsu, YI Eunchae and KWON Yong R. And KWON Yong R.’s metal sculptures capture people’s eyes. ADMIRA Gallery brings works by Taiwanese artist Su Ryan. His works sell like hot cakes. In merely two days, it leaves only one work available now.

We are honored to interview Chairman of Dahin Development, Chang Yu-Neng, at the warehouse area. Mr. Chang said that the works in the warehouse area seem to be quite good, but whether it has collectible value remains to be considered. Mr. Chang appreciates Hong Kong artist TSANG Chui Mei’s works quite well.

There are three themes for eslite hotel area, classic, exploration, and future. Over 50 galleries exhibit in the hotel. The COLLECTORS from London, bringing edition works by Gerhard Richter, Damien Hirst, and Tracey Emin.

ART FORMOSA is dedicated to promoting art values, so ART FORMOSA features a series of lectures which are host by Indonesia collector Wiyu Wahono, Japanese collector ISHINABE Hiroko, ART021 cofounder Bao Yi Feng and Philippines Contemporary Art cofounder Trikie C. Lopa.

Overall, some media and collectors thought that the opening schedule of the two exhibition areas of ART FORMOSA was not appropriate, and it would be more preferable to shorten the time interval. In addition, galleries from Japan account for about a quarter of the total this year. Although ART FORMOSA aims to Asia, most of the joined galleries are from Northeast Asia. Perhaps inviting galleries from other Asian countries will make ART FORMOSA more competitive.
