Han Hsiang-Ning: From the Fifth Moon Group to the International Art Stage

— Sep 3, 2017 by YIART

The Fifth Moon Group was founded over 60 years ago and was joined by many artists. Han Hsiang-Ning recalls that the establishment of the Fifth Moon Group was quite spontaneous.

60 years ago, neither galleries nor contemporary art museums existed. Artists had very few choices for exhibitions. The Fifth Moon Group replaced galleries as a place to exhibit artworks, allowing Han to participate in international art fairs such as the International Biennale of Sao Paolo and the 2nd Biennale of Paris.

He moved to New York City in 1967, where he was influenced by Minimalism and Pop Art. His style transformed from abstraction to minimalism, moving from using traditional oil painting methods to using an airbrush to create work. He later created the "Invisible Image" series, creating a room that was entirely airbrushed with pale-colored specks. Afterwards, he began creating Pop Art inspired paintings of New York cityscapes and paintings of factories, before transitioning to Photorealism. Using photos as reference, he uses spray guns to paint color dots that make up images such as "Street Art" and "Facade West Broadway".

In the 1970's, Han Hsiang-Ning was selected for the Bicentennial: Artist-Immigrants of America, held at the Hirschorn Museum in Washington D.C. Outside of that, he was one of the Chinese artists chosen for exhibition in the Whitney museum of American Art in the late 1970's. Han has had an important impact on American Contemporary Art. In 1985, he began using brushes to paint watercolor and ink on paper, later turning to computer processsing to create image. In 1998, Han returned to his previous style, finding that even digital and photographic arts had limits, he began using ink and paper to create a painted record where he had been, creating an abundance of work.

Han Hsiang-ning has also participated in many prominent museum exhibitions around the world, including exhibitions in the Musée d'Arte Moderne in Paris, the Museum de Arte Moderna in Sao Paulo, the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington D.C., the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Brooklyn Museum. His works have been collected by The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, the Chase Manhattan Bank Collection, the Schroeder Bank Collection, the Richard Brown Baker Collection, the Sidney & Frances Lewis Collection, the Lawrence Ruben Co. Collection, and by m+ in Hong Kong.
